What is a “Call for Sites”?

A “Call for Sites” is a request for landowners in the borough to ‘offer up’ their land as a potential site of development. Most councils use them, and they will form part of the Local Plan.

The “Marden Garden Village” proposal was submitted as a Call For Sites in early March 2019 by the planning agency DHA Planning Ltd, joint landowners Alan Firmin Ltd, John Carpenter, and Marden Turf. The housebuilder with an interest is Countryside Properties PLC.

If sites are identified in the ‘call for sites’ exercise and are being assessed does it mean that they will be allocated for development in the Local Plan?

No. The Call for Sites and the technical assessment of sites put forward is an important evidence source to inform plan-making but does not in itself determine whether a site should be allocated for development. This is because not all sites considered in the assessment will be suitable or ultimately acceptable for development.

What happens next?

Maidstone Borough Council will review all the sites as part of the process of drawing up its Local Plan.
